MARITAL WOES ARE MURDER
A troubled husband re-invented himself as a murderer in the hope that his wife would leave him.
American Teddy Adkin told his wife he had killed a hitchhiker and stolen his wallet, and later repeated the tale to police after his arrest.
In a graphic account the 28-year-old, from Florida, said he had hit the man on the head, causing him to gasp and gurgle in pain.
But all this was a ruse by Adkin who eventually confessed to police that he was simply having marital problems and hoped being labelled a murderer would encourage her to leave him.
The lie was uncovered after the man he claimed to have buried in a forest was found alive and astonished at his apparent demise.
Adkin admitted his tale was made up and said the wallet he used as evidence of his claim had been found in a street.
A police spokeswoman said he would be charged with theft and making a false report, he could also be sent the bill for the police work.
It was not clear whether his wife had taken the hint and dumped him.
